Autumn Crocus

Colchicum

The "Autumn Crocus" plants bloomed the first year but never came back.

Colchicum is not a crocus, but it resembles them, hence the name. Colchicum is a genus with at least 15 species. These came from Brecks.com in a set called "Autumn Jewels" with two Colchicum The Giant and one Water Lily. The Giant is pictured below. These are in the southwest bed.

Colchicum blooms in the fall while dormant and puts out its foliage in the spring. It is the only bulb to bloom while dormant. Colchicum plants like dry, well-drained soil. They are poisonous, so critters avoid them.
